Our vision for the future

"However, the largest innovation potential lies in allowing sensor information to be shared in a safe manner across any application and allowing any device to connect to any application"

In Telenor Objects we believe there will be a shift from vertically integrated closed solutions to a layered open approach where devices will communicate using a wide range of communications systems with software applications - through a new infrastructure we call M2M Service Enablement. This new infrastructure will provide functions common to many applications, thereby reducing complexity, development effort and maintenance costs for these applications. There will also be significant operating cost savings, because the costs for such a managed service infrastructure will be shared across many independent applications. However, the largest innovation potential lies in allowing device information to be shared in a safe manner across any application and allowing any device to connect to any application - which means that new applications can be created on the basis of installed devices. The value of such device networks increase exponentially with the number of nodes. This may result in hyper growth when a critical mass is reached. We have already observed this with the Internet.

We have identified the following key M2M Service Enablement Functions:

• Device and gateway interfacing
• Data capture, handling and storage
• Information exchange and routing
• Alarm handling
• Device management
• Service management
• Solution monitoring/reporting
• Interfacing to business systems
• Connectivity management

Telenor Objects offer these functions efficiently and with telecom quality. We believe in an open approach to our services; open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) will be provided for devices and gateways, software applications, and we will work with likeminded partners to make it as simple in the future for devices to communicate with applications as it is today for humans to communicate with anyone anywhere using the Internet.
