TraceTracker and Tellu both won awards for developing solutions that helps users find things they care about. The awards were handed out at Telenor Object’s partner seminar at Fornebu last week

A result of partnering in M2M market

When Telenor Objects launched its Shepherd Partner Network this spring, the company also invited its partners to participate in a competition to develop a flexible solution for tracking and tracing a range of mobile assets such as tools, machines and materials using RFID, GPS and GSM location technologies. The prize was NOK 100.000 and an opportunity to take part in revenue streams.

Five partners presented their ideas before the summer and two proposals were selected.

"TraceTracker and Tellu both demonstrated thorough understanding of the task at hand. They did however propose very different solutions and this is why we chose to continue the process with both companies," says Thor Steffensen, VP Sales & Marketing in Telenor Objects.

Different solutions for different markets
The two companies have focused on different market segments and functionality when developing their proposals. While TraceTracker has extended their position as a provider of traceability solutions for the professional market, Tellu has taken a fresh look on how to implement a solution for the consumer, SMB market and the public sector.

"It is an honor to work with Telenor Objects to make the "Internet of Things" a reality," says Geir Myrold, head of Nordic region at TraceTracker. "As a leading provider of asset tracking and product traceability solutions, TraceTracker will be developing a unique solution on top of the Telenor Objects Shepherd platform that enables customers to monitor own and third party assets and in real-time and analyze where they have been."

TraceTracker's proposal builds on their experience in the area of food traceability, where they have been present for several years.

Tellu will, based on their expertise on user interaction and usability, offer a self-serviced application that will enable users to tailor the use of sensors and tracking devices to the users own need. The Tellu application will support all types of sensors offered on the Shepherd platform. Tellu also displayed an Android based mobile application which demonstrates how a mobile phone may be used as a sensor device on the Shepherd platform.

"We are delighted to be part of the Shepherd network and we are looking forward to develop this market together with Telenor Objects and the Shepherd partners," says Geir Melby CEO at Tellu.

Aiming for a generic asset tracking solution
Current Track and Trace solutions are often proprietary which makes it difficult to share information or use devices from third party suppliers. Telenor Objects expects that platforms such as its Shepherd platform, which enables any (supported) device to be monitored and controlled by any application, will spur growth in the M2M market.

"In our device library a customer will find several devices compatible with the solutions. We believe freedom of choice will make the offering more attractive," says Thor Steffensen.

The awards were handed out at Telenor Objects partner seminar last week. Present at the seminar was also pilot customer Grunnarbeid AS. The company presented construction industry challenges in terms of having tools, machinery and materials available at the right place at the right time. Margins are generally low in the industry and reduction of work stoppages could potentially improve margins significantly.

Telenor Objects plans to roll out the TraceTracker and Tellu solutions by the end of the year.
